a winded city

This has been some week. We had a wind storm come through on Sunday (thanks Ike) that produced category 1 force winds. There was no rain, the sun was out with a mild temperature and lots of wind. Russ and I were out at lunch when the power went out in the restaurant. Nothing says Sunday afternoon like a nice romantic mexican lunch in the dark. Insert eyeroll. We never lost power at my house so we were some of the more fortunate ones. By evening, there were 250,000 without power.

The school systems have been closed all week and will remain so through tomorrow. Some grocery stores are running on generators and have had to throw out all their perishables. Needless to say, the stores and restaurants with power are pretty busy. They have declared a state of emergency and the National Guard has been brought in to help with traffic flow because of the many traffic lights out. These are some pictures from the Courier Journal Newspaper website

My work doesn't have any electricity so I have been off all week as well. The first day was pretty cool, "woohoo an extra day off" but now I'm bored having already taken care of all my errands and then some. Not to mention the fact that I am hourly and not getting paid right now. These are the days that I'm actually glad to be back home.

remembering 9/11

There's no doubt that life can get pretty hectic. I know for the past month I have been so busy it's overwhelming at times. Work is steadily getting busier which is always a good thing and we were supposed to start using a new software program on September 1st that would make everything easier. From sending out orders, tracking inventory, maintaining the customer and broker databases...everything was going to be faster. It was only ready about two days ago because there were still a few bugs to work out. So we have been playing catch up and on top of that, Angie has been on vacation this week. Remember, there are only three of us and we're the main office. I have all kinds of reminders on my calendar and notes galore on how to do Angie's job. Oh, it's been fun.

Anyways, as I drove to work this morning on auto pilot, something caught my eye. There is a car wash at the corner of a busy intersection that I pass through everyday. I never pay much attention to it but today there was a guy standing out by the road holding an American flag.

Just standing there.

It took me a second... then it dawned on me that today is September 11th. And just like that all the work awaiting me at the office went away.
